Overview

Hope College's Alternative Breaks have long been an opportunity to learn, serve, and grow alongside communities around the world. This spring, you'll continue that tradition in Iceland.

Working alongside the Salvation Army, you'll support local programs serving refugees, families, and individuals experiencing hardship. Whether helping with food distribution, community outreach, or everyday hospitality, you'll discover that faith often takes shape in ordinary acts of compassion.

Throughout the week, you'll also experience Iceland's remarkable landscapes, build lasting friendships with your team, and participate in Compass Time and Table Talk—daily rhythms designed to help you connect your experiences abroad with the life you're building at home.

You'll return with more than unforgettable memories. You'll come home with a broader perspective, deeper relationships, and a renewed understanding of how service can shape both the communities we serve and the people we become.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve alongside the Salvation Army through community outreach, hospitality, and practical acts of care.

  • Build relationships with local leaders while learning about life, faith, and service in Iceland.

  • Experience Iceland's extraordinary landscapes, history, and culture beyond the typical tourist path.

  • Practice daily rhythms of reflection through Compass Time and Table Talk.

  • Strengthen friendships with your Hope College team through shared meals, service, and adventure.

  • Discover how ordinary acts of generosity can shape both the communities we serve and the people we become.
