Overview

Looking for a transformative and adventurous way to begin your summer?

Join fellow Hendrix students for a week in Iceland that combines environmental stewardship, cultural exploration, and intentional reflection. Working alongside local organizations and international volunteers, you'll participate in hands-on conservation projects while experiencing one of the world's most remarkable landscapes.

Throughout the week, you'll explore Iceland's waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, glaciers, and black sand beaches while building friendships with your team and creating space to reflect on your values, your future, and the kind of life you want to lead.

You'll return home with more than unforgettable memories. You'll come back with fresh perspective, stronger relationships, and a renewed sense of purpose.


What You’ll Do

  • Restore Iceland's natural landscapes through reforestation, beach cleanups, and environmental stewardship projects.

  • Work alongside Worldwide Friends staff and international volunteers committed to caring for creation.

  • Explore Iceland's waterfalls, glaciers, volcanic landscapes, black sand beaches, and dramatic coastlines.

  • Build lasting friendships through shared meals, service, and adventure.

  • Practice daily rhythms of Compass Time and Table Talk, connecting your experiences abroad to the life you're building at home.

How to Join

This experience is open to Hendrix College students.

1) Apply through the Miller Canter at Hendrix College.

2) Complete your Compass onboarding. Once accepted, you'll receive a few forms to complete and meet with a Compass staff member to prepare for the experience.

3) Get ready for the journey! Compass will provide a detailed packing list, travel resources, and host two pre-trip team meetings during the month before departure to help you build community and feel confident heading to Iceland.

Every Compass trip is different! The schedule below is just an example—each experience varies depending on your group, location, and the needs of our partners. The daily rhythm often shifts based on weather, service projects, and cultural opportunities. Flexibility is key!

You'll receive more specific trip details during your interview and in pre-trip meetings with your group.

Schedule

Day 1

Depart from campus by bus to Nashville, where you'll catch an overnight flight to Iceland.

Day 2

Arrive in Reykjavík, travel to Krýsuvík, settle into Worldwide Friends, and begin exploring Iceland's unique landscape and culture.

Day 3

Join the Worldwide Friends team and begin hands-on environmental stewardship projects, helping restore Iceland's natural landscapes through reforestation, land restoration, and conservation efforts.

Day 4

Continue serving alongside local staff and international volunteers while learning about sustainability, community, and caring for the natural world.

Day 5

Excursion day! Explore Iceland's waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, glaciers, mountains, and dramatic coastline while experiencing one of the world's most remarkable environments.

Day 6

Return to your service projects, deepen friendships with your team, and reflect on everything you're learning throughout the week.

Day 7

Wrap up your final projects, celebrate the week together, and enjoy a closing reflection before returning to Reykjavík for your final evening in Iceland.

Day 8

Depart Iceland and return home with new friendships, unforgettable memories, and a broader perspective on your place in the world.
